Default Getting Tonsils Removed   #1
So, since 2010 I have had strep throat nearly 20 times. That is no exaggeration, friends. I have taken almost all prescription antibiotics you can think of. For a year now doctors and myself have toyed with the idea of just getting my tonsils out to see if that helps. We think I am more prone to the illness than most (though I have never spread it before). Currently, I have Mono. With mono, the virus takes up residence in the back of the throat, forming whitish, yellow gunk much like strep. The infection is nearly gone from back there, but it has left deep cavities in my throat where it was.And for the past 24 hours I haven't had a voice. I made an appointment with a throat specialist to start the process of just getting the suckers out.

So my question I pose is: Who here has had the surgery? How old were you? What was your experience with the actual surgery and then recovery? Any tips or advice you could give? This will be my first (other than getting wisdom teeth out, which they didn't even put me to sleep for).

I didn't have surgery whatsoever, but I do know someone (my ex bf) who had mono when he was 14, and he has had his tonsils taken out too, it did help him although his recovery from mono was a slow process.
I can't say much about it, the fact that I can't back it up with medical knowledge and/or experience.
I can ask him though, on what his take with regard to your issue.

My mono was real bad at first, but now I don't even think about it. I don't get dog tired as easily, my throat has cleared up, and my liver/spleen aren't nearly as in bad shape as they were. I am glad for that.

I just don't want to have a follow up of my recovery to be Strep. XD

I honestly haven't had my tonsils taken out and I'm 27.. worst thing I ever had done was a tooth pulled.. which was quite interesting since my mom bought roast beef sandwiches for lunch and when I got home, instead of the jello, I was chowing down on one of those bad boys before the bleeding even stopped all the way.. oddly.. I wasn't in much pain..

but I have heard stories from friends and family, supposedly you get to eat alot of ice cream.. sounds like heaven in a way through I would get tired of ice cream after the second bowl. Hopefully things will go smoothly and you'll recover from both fine. :3

Both my dad and i had them removed, they grew back for both of us. He was 10 and i was 14. So i usually get strep/tonsillitis like 8 times a year on average :s

I have not had it but my brother had it for repeated infections as a child. It was not uncommon to routinely do it back in the day and everyone survived and did well but times have changed...why do procedures that are not necessary for people who may not need it done. At any rate it was a benign procedure for my brother and it helped stop some of those recurring infections he was getting.

You can always get a second opinion from another doctor too. From what I know with my brother it was an outpatient procedure, he recovered very quickly and it was beneficial for him.
I used to have a sig. Really.

Oh dear Gods. I just got over the nasty throat infection and the acute phase of Mono just to get a ridiculous cold. D:

I didn't have to get the surgery but I was in the same situation.
When I was a kid I had strep throat about twice a month when I was kid.
They suggested that I get my tonsils removed but kid me said: "NO! Then I won't be able to sing! ):<"
Well, I paid the consequence, now my tonsils are what my mom describes as "golf ball size". xD;
I did have other surgeries, I've had a wisdom teeth removed and kind of had a colonoscopy.
When I say kind of, I was put to sleep, a camera was inserted into my mouth and a piece of my colon was taken. Normally the camera goes up the other end...

ANYWAYS, from my experiences, I didn't feel anything and I was out quick.
Some people dream but I didn't, it felt like I was only out for about 10-15 minutes.

Either way, I wish you luck. <3

Surgery day is the 16th of January. Kinda freaking out now. XD

It was also discovered that I have Crytpic Tonsils (tonsils with gaps and ridges making me more prone to infections)

You'll be just fine. No worries. You'll be out, you won't remember it. Don't be nervous. Don't think about it for now. ^_^

I got mine out at around 6-ish and was put under for it.
The only thing I remember was that I got lots of plain pizza and Ice cream, and I had to eat ice for a while.

I had mine taken out when I was five, so I hardly remember it. But I do remember ice cream. Lots and lots of ice cream.

I warn you, recovery might suck. One of the reasons tonsillectomies were done routine as a child is that recovery is easier the younger you are. It will be best for your health though. My stepsister was in the same position as you, with repeated lung, bronchial, and throat infections, as well as having had mono in high school. On the plus side, it should really help your health once they are gone. :)

Yeah, I am nervous as hell. The recovery will probably suck more now that I am older, but the needed wasn't around until now. I do hope this stops the every two month strep throat infection I get. D:

Mom and I went to the grocery store and stocked up on popsicles, ice cream and juices.

I had a close friend who had tonsils removed, but she seemed fine through it. She was really glad it was done, and really appreciated us spending time with her - or maybe just all the ice-cream'd goodies we supplied!
