Pillow shading is shading that's based heavily on where the outlines are, and not quite so much the general 'sun' thing people do. It CAN be used in very specific situations, such as when the subject is extremely close to a light source, and said light source happens to be between the subject and the viewer... But as you can imagine, these situations are few and far between! And by the time you even get into specifics like that, you can probably do it better.

I took a look at the tutorials you used, and I can see why you ran into a bit of trouble.

Maybe this one will help more: link!

Another thing I would suggest is working on getting rid of the stiff feeling. I'd suggest doing basic flats or simple shading if different cloths and clothing items. I'm pretty sure you can use your own to reference, yeah? But getting a looser, more natural feel will help leaps and bounds, too.

Twigg is brilliant at what she does. If she's helping you, I'm sure you'll do well.

Stiff?

And the main problem I ran into is the shading of the skirt...

I tried to focus on a light source with the shirt, and tried to do the same with the skirt, but I didn't understand how in the heck to do the skirt and still have definition of the fold-thinggies...

I saw that tutorial and other than telling me what I already knew about the lighting thing (that I really did try to do) it didn't seem like much help...

It's a little difficult to tell with the quality, I must say. You could try making the source further to the side.

You really can't be afraid of going bold and using many tones to get the effect you need.

sdzfkgzdivgb I'd doodle you something really quick if I wasn't about to die from pain.

Yeah, the way that was saved killed it...but I'm gonna try again with the shading...but the skirt still alludes me...

The pallets I'm using are 6 color pallets...

I may just leave the skirt blank for now until I understand it better...but the shirt I'm gonna try again...

Keeping to things with fewer folds would probably be a good plan, then work your way up.

I totally skipped the stiff point, and I'm sorry. Working up to folds will be what really helps with the stiffness, but until then, things like not making the edges too straight, or the clothes too perfectly lined with your base... And, for example, that left (subject's left) shoe shouldn't be flat on the ground like the right is. Her foot is tilted, so part would be off the floor.

Keep in mind that I don't pixel, lmao. Your try here is better than my first one was.

Pssh. Confidence, girl! Just keep trying, and don't be afraid of getting input. Some of us are actually helpful! ... Us that aren't me! Bwaha!

But really. Hard work wins over natural talent every time when it comes to art.

I will, but it won't be for a couple days, homework comes before pixels...

I hope I can get a little better when I get a tablet...although I'm still not sure what kind to get, although in the thread I've got, bamboo has been the main one mentioned...

Mine's a bamboo fun, pen and touch, but it turns out the touch bit really was unneeded extra cost. I never use it, lol... Works beautifully, though. Had it a couple years now.

Paint works perfectly well for those sorts of pixels, yeah. If you do decide you want to try Tris style, though, photoshop will really come in handy.
