TY is a medium, I wouldn't say it has any special purpose besides showing things. It's the same for books.
On the show thing, I wouldn't be surprised if a lot of it is money. Contemporary shows are getting more and more costly to make with the special effects and fancy cinematography and such. Reality shows on the other hand, dirt cheap, or cheaper. I remember it coming up a couple years ago that so many new and good shows were being dropped because the studios couldn't afford to make them anymore.
We're headed into summer anyway, and rerun time so now is when shows will be dropped and new contracts picked up for the new season in the fall, if I have my timing right.
Popularity wise, it wouldn't surprise me if some shows want to go out on a high note, rather than drag on to an unsatisfactory finale, of when people don't care to bother with it (and potential DVD sales) anymore.
I hardly notice the missing new stuff because 90% of what I watch is either repeat BBC or nature shows, and those are springing out of the woodwork lately. I think we can blame "Planet Earth" for that. They probably sold off their extra footage to Disney and such for Earth and Life, etc.
