Both. We didn't get many referrals to begin with, and only a couple people actually stuck around for any period of time.
One noteworthy problem with referrals is that it's kinda unfair to people who just tell their friends to join. You don't have anyone left to invite when the contest starts.
It also makes the invitations look kinda like spam when it's incentivized like that.
