and the way i was thinking or we can do it one of the ways you posted as well was that the world slowly twists and the change is only noticed by a few choice members while others get twisted in the process of the world changing so they wouldn't notice anything is different.

but our character could at one point be normal modern humans who end up in a different form due to the change
