Well, I would definitely tell your doctor about the dreams, they count as a side effect. He/She may decide to put you on something else which should stop these. Dreams are strongly affected by our brain's chemistry, and any form of medication, specially for what you've mentioned, will change that drastically.
In addition, with a bit of practice you can force your dream to become lucid; however, since you've always been a lucid dreamer it might be harder for you. Take some time to relax before bed, think about a trigger or key word that you can use to 'break' the dream. I tend to have it be anything with wings...my brain is good at inserting those into most of my dreams...and use that as a mental trigger to KNOW you're dreaming and you can sometimes take control from there.
Beyond that, I've been an insomniac for yeeeeears, and I've learned a few things. Even if you can't sleep, lay in the normal position with your eyes closed. Mentally recite something you've got memorized, or count, or do something methodical. This allows your brain to partially rest, so you will still be tired, but you'll be more rested than otherwise. If you can always 'sleep' at the same time; set up a routine. By having a constantly shifting sleep pattern it can be hard to train your body and mind to sleep.
Hopefully you'll get to sleep soon without any nightmares.
I've gone to look for myself, if I should return before I get back keep me here.
Nikko was here out of love for Fey. <3
