I'll second Salvatore, as I like him too. I only read his Drizzt books (he has other Forgotten Realms books as well as some of his own stuff) up until the Hunter's Blades trilogy because I got tired of his writing by then and didn't find his new books as good as his old ones.

One advantage of Salvatore is that he comments a fair but on what has previously happened when it comes to particular events, so one can pretty much pick up any book of his and not be too lost no matter where in the series it is.

My favourite Drizzt book is The Silent Blade. Though for that one is it good to have a bit of a background.

Salvatore also wrote a five book series called "The Cleric Quintet" about a priest named Cadderly who also appeares in his other books from time to time. Many people I know think the Quintet is better than his Dark Elf books. It comes in an omnibus version, as well as the single books. The first one, Canticle, tends to be the hardest to find in my experiences though they've all been reprinted since I last read them.
