I'm thinking maybe it was a ship wreck, and then another ship (the one she's on) stops by to check it out, to see how old the shipwreck is, and such. Then they pick through the crew and maybe select the people they need.
Or.. She could be a stowaway on a ship.
Or he a stowaway on a ship.
She could be found drowning. Anything O.o;.
