Lev coughed up some of the little blood he had left, straining his neck to look upwards. He move his lips as if trying to speak, but no sound came out. He looked puzzled for a moment, then tried it again to no effect. Giving up on communication for now, he took hold of the ladder below the manhole, and attempted to hoist himself up with his one good hand. He made it past the fifth run before he body finally gave out, slipping in to unconsciousness as his body fell to the floor.
