The doll fell face-first to the floor, caught off guard by the sudden transformation and disappearance of the animal she had been giving affection. Slowly bringing herself upright on her knees, the doll saw the animal just as it had reached its master and transformed again.

Though she had only encountered animals on a few occasions in her short life, every time they had stayed and allowed her to play, regarding her as something like a moving tree or signpost. Having felt rejection for the first time, the doll stared in shock, and soon dark black pools began to gather in the corners of her lifelike eyes. A light whimper slowly escaped from within her, and it was obvious that she was close to letting out tearful sobs.
