I personally have mastered a variation of Risk made by my family called Riskaan. It can be played using any board with clearly marked borders and here's how it works:
-Setting up the game, each person gets 5 units which may be placed on any space on the board. One unit is to be placed at a time and players place units in a sequential clockwise order. (the blank spaces left will be explained later.
-on each turn, players receive troops the same way units are received in Risk (3 spaces per unit received) and players include the bonus from continents.
-there is a occupy phase in which adjacent and empty spaces may be occupied by troops.
-there is a attack phase which occurs only after the occupy phase and works in basic Risk principle (which may be varied for the convenience of all of the players before the game begins)
-there is a reinforcement phase after the attack phase which works like the original reinforcement phase in Risk except that territories may be completely evacuated of troops. This movement is called "unoccupying" and only can occur during the reinforcement phase.
-Players would also have to note that "unoccupied" spaces cannot be attacked and can only be occupied during their occupy phase.

So yeah, it's a different game.
