here's a little tip:
Japanese this and that are not used in the same way as english this and that. In english, we can say "this person" or "that person" or "this book" and it's the same all over. But in japanese kore (this), sore (that - close to the opposite speaker), and are (that [over there]) cannot be used for a person. to say "this person" one would say "kono hito" (hito=person) or "sono hito" or "ano hito". For a place you use koko, soko, asoko (here, there - again close to other person, over there)
