Knock.
Gregory was waiting for the familiar sound. He immediately swung open the door to a surprised Julia whose hand was still in a fist and raised to knock again on the door. She slowly lowered her arm to fold her hands in front of her, and then bowed her head slightly in a customary greeting. "Good evening, Master Gregory," she smiled warmly. "Is everything to your liking?"
Meanwhile, the knocking on Travis' door was growing more violent very rapidly. It started with just normal rapping, but now it seemed like someone was beating the wood in a futile attempt to gain entry. The doorknob twisted and turned as the door shook uncontrollably. The hinges that kept it attached to the frame shot off through the room, but after that things fell silent. There was peace and quiet, but only for a moment. Abruptly, a scream from the other side of the door rang out. The mirror in the bathroom shattered under the ear-piercing sound, and the room vibrated as if gutted by the noise.
The door took on the consistency of puddy just then, and expanded towards Travis in the shape of a human hand. Five fingers made of wood stretched out and approached him quickly, a face soon surfacing on the wood to make the situation that much more horrifying. The face formed a mouth that produced disgusting sound by scraping pieces of wood together, but Travis could just barely make out two words:
"Get out."
Just as the hand reached him and threatened to close around him, everything returned to normal. In the blink of an eye, it was as if nothing had happened. The door was intact with its hinges secured, the bathroom mirror wasn't in a hundred small pieces littering the floor, and no one ever came to investigate the scream.
Cruelty is a matter of perspective.
