I just read through the conversation, but didn't see the image. As one impartial to whether the image was offensive or not, here's my two cents.
If some people think a picture that you're posting is offensive, then you should probably take it down. or at least hide it in the spoiler tags we have now. in my opinion, that's part of being a courteous person. =/ I would never want to intentionally offend someone. I know that some people find offensive material to be entertaining. like South Park. I don't watch that show because I don't think it's funny to offend other people, even in jest.
There's a difference between having offensive material in a thread and having offensive material in a signature. in a signature, you're forcing people to look at it every time they look at your post. if it's art posted in a thread, people who don't want to go look at it don't have to. but as a signature, it's being pushed into other people's faces. I might be able to ignore a picture once or twice, but after multiple posts in a high-traffic thread like this one, that's too much to say "just ignore it."
on the idea of "monkey-see, monkey-do," I know that it is important to talk to kids about how mimicry of inappropriate things is bad. I know not to fully blame media for a person's actions. but you can't control whether or not the kids on the other side of the internet are being talked to by their parents. maybe I know that it's wrong to rape somebody and not be affected by an image, but there will be someone else out there whose parents never taught them that. and then, without that parental guidance, they could be easily influenced by inappropriate images.
Also, even anime/fantasy worlds can influence real life. when I was a kid, I wanted to leave home when I turned 10 and go on a pokemon adventure, then go to Hogwarts. =/ just because it's not "real" doesn't mean it doesn't have a very real influence.
And yes, Inari, as far as I can tell the pokemon site is fixed. it's working for me anyway. **shrug**
