I was just confused about the various nuances that we experience speaking English. Like, is there a sarcastic tone of voice in Chinese? Or anything else that sort of telegraphs meaning without actually saying "I mean this".

Actually, that's something that interests me in all languages. It's the reason why I'd like to learn as many languages as I can, because I think it opens up new levels of understanding about a culture or country. I really like languages. Even though I apparently suck at them, because I've been trying to self-teach Japanese for the last year or two, and I can't speak a single complete sentence. xD
