Animals can tell when someone's a good person. I had a similar experience with my waifu's shy, skittish cat. She tolerates my presence whenever I'm in the same room as her, and doesn't go and hide. On occasion, she'll even let me pet her for a few pets. Her more outgoing brother likes to climb me like a tree.
