I've had three *really* bad experiences with stylists...
I'm going to put these in spoilers because they're long stories
The first one I can remember was when I was seeing this guy. He was great, but he really didn't know how to do anything other than straighten my hair... It was obvious he was very skilled in straightening hair, but since I'm biracial and have multiple textures in my hair, when it came to actual hair care, he had no clue what to do. He recommended I use sulfate shampoos (HUGE no-no for curly hair) and he'd often brush out my hair from roots to tip (again, HUGE no-no. Curly hair is supposed to be brushed from ends to root, so backwards)
I was dumb enough to let him give me a texturizer... but it ended up looking really scraggly and tacky because my hair was so fried from all the straightening. >:(
My second bad experience was after I shaved my head. It was about three months later and my hair started to grow in... My aunt recommended a stylist because I wanted my hair straightened. I brought a picture of Anne Hathaway with her hair short. The guy straightened my hair and it ended up being much longer than a pixie cut. So I told him, "I don't want it styled". And he styled it anyway, cutting off most of my hair while it was straight. Mind you, when you cut curly hair when it's straight, when it goes back to being curly, it will look even shorter.
So in the end, my straight hair looked like a grandma's style. And when I washed it... I swear to X'hal, I looked like the Fresh Prince of Bel-Air. It was the worst style I've ever had.. and he charged me an extra $50 for something I TOLD HIM I DID NOT WANT. I cried as soon as I saw myself in the mirror.
The last *really bad* experience I had in a salon was after I'd been wearing my hair natural for about four years. I went to a stylist that I used to see when I was a kid. She was amazing with texturizers, but she really wasn't familiar with styling natural hair. So I asked her to straighten it for photos. And it looked nice... But she did not use a heat protection on my hair and I ended up having very severe heat damage. >:(
