What you can do is, go to Layering in Edit Avatar and see the way you've layered the items in your current avi. I usually take a snip of the layering, host the image and store it in a post in my avatar thread.
That way, even when you're experimenting with different items to familiarize yourself while redoing your avi, if it isn't working out and you want to recreate your previous avi you can just refer to the image of the layering you saved
