After several studies which linked the particular food coloring "Red No. 2" to possible health problems, many products containing that color were recalled and the use of Red No.2 as food additive got prohibited. People became wary of red food coloring, and while M&Ms had always used a different type of red for their candy, their red M&M still got replaced with a less suspicious orange instead.
