There's a way around that:

1. Make the avi you want in the editor.
2. Open the editor in another tab; you should have the editor open in two tabs now.
3. Click "Revert" on one of the tabs, let's call this tab 2.
4. Go to the other tab, tab 1 and hit Save.
5. Go back to tab 2, make any adjustment to the avatar. You can move an item down, add an item, remove an item, just change it somehow.

If you refresh the page, your old avatar will still be there in the editor (with whatever change you made to it), and you can go to your profile/wherever, refresh, and save the other avatar, then just save over it when you're done.

Oh wow. I honestly feel like that way was super obvious and I'm just super dumb for not trying it out before.
