Aluminum actually isn't THAT bad for cookware. It conducts heat really well (almost as well as copper) and it's pretty durable (counterpoint, aluminum cookware is usually made too thin, which cuts into its durability). It's usually more the cheap nonstick coating that I worry about; it's not usually particularly good at not sticking to things, it tends to scratch really easily so you have to use wood or softer plastic utensils on it (though you should do this even with good Teflon), and it doesn't like getting washed or reheated over and over.
