I think her death was added in for shock value. The audience was probably expecting everything to end with Kilgrave losing his powers/somehow being safely imprisoned while the world was aware that, yes, there is in fact a goddamned mind controller out there who made Hope kill her parents. The deaths of established characters like Hope and Reuben all built up to make Kilgrave's end completely satisfying (although personally I felt like he deserved to suffer a bit more).
