One of the first things I did after reading the second chapter was to look up the effects of a laudanum overdose. The story stated that they were about halfway through their meal which, at a fancy-schmancy dinner party would be what... fifteen to thirty minutes after they'd taken the first bite? Which would have been plenty of time for the drug to settle in Lord Longname's system. And according to the all-knowing, all-encompassing wikipedia, a large laudanum overdose can cause "severe respiratory depression or collapse and death."
It's still possible that there could be another means of murder unknown to everyone else, but I feel like it would require too much interrogation to find out.
