In fact it's a specific kind of rare monster. There are "rares" that only show up infrequently, and when they do appear, they can appear in a wave with other monsters, and their drop rates (when they appear) are the same as any other monster. Then there are "invades" that completely replace the round they appear in and have a 100% drop rate. Invades TYPICALLY have lower appearance chances than rares (in order to balance their higher drop rate), although there are some rares that have pretty low appearance chances.

And yeah, Gryphon Rider is solid -- the kind of monster that you're certain to use for a long time unless you throw a lot of money at the REM.
