What she said! I remember events waaay in the past (damn, it's been a while since I've been here) where people would automatically drop out if they felt they weren't good enough to compete. Or maybe make different categories and limit entries for each user, something like that.

Also, I know I don't have much say as far as how to deal with items, but I like the idea of an automated charity/dumpster/grab bag. As it has already been pointed out, if you gain the ability to sell back special event items, those items will be gone forever - much more prudent to make them available to someone who might actually want them.
