Well first thing i should say is that they don't die. =) even if you don't feed them they don't die, EVER!

The only care they really need is to be fed. Keeping them fed over a certain percentage gets you nice little daily bonus's so its good to make sure you feed them once a day at least. =)

Other types of care is breeding and leveling them.

Breeding is just incubating their eggs once a day for about 6-7 days. Once the eggs hatch you can sell them or exalt them. Exalting them gives you money and if the flight you choose (the element) is doing a dom push (its kinda like a mini war) each exalted dragon gives your team a boost. the higher the level they are the more of a boost you get when exalted (you get more money too)

As for leveling, you do that in the coliseum. You battle with the monsters (Beastclans) and level up your monsters. Leveling up like i said above, you can exalt for money or just make epic teams. I can link you to some Coli guides later on. =) Grinding in the coli is a good source of income, not just for exalting dragons that didn't sell, but the stuff monsters drop can sell nicely as well.

Oh if they 'die' in the coli, once you go to the next round our exit out of the coli they'll be fine, just need more food to perk them up again ^-^

You can also dress up your dragons, or give them 'genes' which gives them patterns on their skins. There are 3 types of genes, Primary (main body) Secondary (wings) and then Tert (extra patterns that go over the others to make cool designs or even give it spines if the tert color is bad)
