Monsters awaken by feeding them copies of themselves -- that is, you feed a Samurai Ogre to a Samurai Ogre; you can't feed a Samurai Ogre to an Ice Samurai Ogre or vice versa.

Monsters that already have at least one awoken skill will always remember how many awoken skills they have, even if they evolve (or unevolve). So you can feed two Samurai Ogres to a third Samurai Ogre, and then evolve it into Ice Samurai Ogre, and it'll still have both of its awakenings.

Try to get at least two evolved kitties of the each type you want to use so you can get the Two-Pronged Attack awakening for them.
