You can probably get away with only having three. 9 damage per round will still take out something with a countdown of at least 2 before it can get a hit off on you. 12 just makes it safer because then you've got some wiggle room.
Mass attacks are helpful, but don't let building a mass attack keep you from clearing out junk orbs; you need to make sure you keep an influx of the colors you need.
