the needle is on the head, the head can be replaced. The plates on the other hand are where the data is stored. if they are scratched, then the hard drive is no good. only good for parts.

from the looks of it the arm that reads the plates, is missing this tiny square thing. when that square thing came off it must have caused the scratches on the plates before disappearing completely. So the head is what needs replaced.

-taking apart an already doomed hard drive isn't gonna hurt anything. now if it were a brand new hard drive then yea.. i'm not gonna mess with it. but since its a hard drive that isn't working, i'm gonna dissect the bastard until i know EVERYTHING *u* -
