I told a friend I'd want to solve the problem on that Freddy's game with a tire iron, and she shared her theories and comments on the game backstory:

Well, some say that this is based on a Chuck E. Cheese employee losing it after being fired and shooting his fellow employees after closing...and that the programmer received criticism that his art style was too "wooden/doll-like/robotic"

FNaF 2 gives more hints, but no certainty. (Generally thought to be a prequel/sequel mesh-up)...sort of a thing where one of the new animatronics is responsible for originally "giving life" to the children who were killed.

Generally accepted timeline...assuming FNaF isn't going the way Zelda and most horror themed things go and have no storyline (spoilers):

1. Something happens to Fazbear's Diner, a family-owned Chuck E. Cheeses knockoff. It closes and gives rights to Fazbear Entertainment.
2. Fazbear Entertainment opens Freddy Fazbear's Pizzaria and buys the Puppet and the Old Animatronics. They dismantle and recycle the old Animatronics to make new, more modern versions. The New Foxy is torn apart by kids so often it is abandoned in the play area as "the Mangle"
3. At sometime during all of this, a child is abducted/killed outside the place.
4. The Puppet acts up, and the animatronics are installed with a malfunctioning criminal database. The first Nightguard uses a mask to keep them at bay, and insists on taking the morning shift.
5. Children start disappearing during the day, and the Old Animatronics activate during the new Nightguard's (a college student on a summer job) shift.
6. The Puppet, as a different haunted force - either from the first kid, Fazbear's Diner, or something else - puts the spirits (bodies?) of the murdered kids inside the old Animatronics.
7. A employee, implied to be the first Nightguard, is caught in a Golden Freddy suit, killing children. He runs, is caught and jailed, and later escapes and dies. His/her motivation could range from insanity by Puppet to just plain insanity.
8. The second Nightguard (or the first) spends a night at Freddy's for extra pay (or something else)...
9. The second Nightguard is then switched to the day shift for a final party, and is implied to be the "Victim of the Bite of '87")
10. Fazbear Entertainment closes the place for investigation. The new models are taken, and the old models "fixed." Foxy will eventually become out of order.
11. The third Nightguard, Phoneguy, takes over months later when the trials and all are over. He installs security doors and the like at the new location, and ties it to a limited power generator. He holds the job for years...with occasional switching with another guard who "doesn't make it"
12. Phoneguy is eventually caught/killed, but not before leaving tips to Mike, the protagonist of FNaF 1. Events happen.
13. Due to bad publicity (you think!) Fazbear Entertainment declares bankruptcy.
