What I did with Age of Mythology: Build many walls between myself and the initial bases of my enemies. Keep them from expanding with sentries. Build a civilization with wonders, temples, marketplaces, caravans, etc. Set up nature preserves (wall off forests with animals from the civilians).

I admit that FPS games are rather dull without teamwork/friends. In strategy games, it depends. Most of the strategy games I played eventually either fail due to being luck-based or unbalanced.
Dawn of War was famous for that - one race had early access to elite units, while another had enough ranged firepower that they could end you and 3 others in 10 minutes...without a chance of fighting back. It isn't strategy at that point. You don't learn from your mistakes.
