I definitely encourage reading manga versus watching anime because just like movies the shows tend to miss stuff in the book/manga or add stuff that was never in the original. Most of it is for the sake of time, either cutting out parts to save time or creating filler to add time so they may continue to work on the main story. I think that's why Crystal is only released every 2 weeks because they want to make sure the episodes are "perfect" before releasing them.
