It's over 9000!
That's the usual misconception about shows that are put on for 'kids'. Another example where something like this happened was Tokyo Mew Mew, which in the US was called MewMew Power. There were actually scenes cut out of the show and replaced, like parts of the transformation scenes. Not to mention if you watched the original show in sub titles the original script included swear words and such while in America all that was cut out. Same thing with One Piece, Pokemon (yes, that did get edited to fit American standards), Yugioh, Voltron (Go Go Lion) and many more. Most of the shows America sees that are 'kids' shows that are from Japan were not actually meant for 'kids' but teenagers. There are even some cases where mature rated stuff in Japan was modified to make it teen rated (I think Dragonball was one of these but not sure). Sailor Moon falls into this as well, which is why I want to watch the sub titled one instead of the dubbed one. Not to mention that there were several things cut from the original anime when it was brought over to America, one of them contained a scene where you can see Usagi's bare stomach because her uniform top is not long enough while talking to a friend, but part of that conversation was cut out.
