Ultimately, it's an issue of business plans.
Brint believes he'll make a lot of money with Unifacetweet Factionbookr, by imitating them, and trying to mold UniFactions into some sort of superconglomerate social media site.
Good business policy states that once you have established yourself in a market (in this case, the UniFactions community), you maintain and build upon that market, adding features in the same vein, making changes to enhance the experience of THAT consumer base or else minor tweaks to add appeal to other markets while maintaining your original one.
He believes he can magically keep what he has now by drastically changing everything, but that would be like Wal-Mart suddenly deciding to compete with Saks 5th Avenue. It's a different market, and the people who want what's at one will not want what's in the other.
If he kept UniFaction's functionality as-is and just added one of his new ideas, like a twitter-esque feed or something, he probably would have gotten away with it. As must as the UniFactions community dislikes social media as a whole, I could see a single feature being adopted by the community, tentatively at first but more quickly as others grew to appreciate it, and pretty soon we'd have Ninja giveaways in the feed and probably a nice market going to buy and sell the box-of-the-month.
Slow changes, one at a time, and he may have succeeded in his plans while still maintaining the community. But this? It's probably a great social media site, but where'd UniFactions go?
And this is why his site is not as successful as it could be - because he doesn't value what he already has.
I don't want to harp on this though. That's my thoughts, and the things that he'll never see because he doesn't want to see anything other than his own decisions.
And with that, I will say no more about it.
This forum, on the other hand, looks like it's going to be a lot of fun.
