"hex" means "hexadecimal." Instead of 0-9, it goes 0-f. 0 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 a b c d e f.
 
A number like #000000, #ffffff, or #ff0000 can be split into parts for Red, Green, Blue light. The higher the number, the stronger that color. So, all 0s means no color, all fs means all color (black, white). #ff0000 is Red, #00ff00 is Green, and #0000ff is blue. #ff00ff is that horrible magenta color.
