I know it may sound odd, but I have found that in the event of not being able to find a job, may I suggest making your own...at least so as to pay for food/shelter. I know one person who worked there way into being a full time webcomic-er, getting enough donations so as to make some form of living.

(Is not trying to be naive or say such a thing is an end-all, just adding an option)
