That I certainly understand. The albums that I've listened to extensively don't carry the same weight anymore that they used to simply due to the fact that they're now so well-known to me that listening to them adds nothing new to the experience -- and I become bored if there's nothing new.

That's just due to sheer ignorance, of course -- they couldn't have chosen to support something that they didn't know anything about. On the optimistic side of that, though, by mentioning the fact that they're wearing a band shirt, they're at least inclined to find out more about said band (which will, of course, influence whether or not they wear said shirt in the future). And yes, no harm done.
With that said, I'm now listening to Patterns in the Ivy II by Opeth -- absolute, pure beauty.
All generalizations are false, including this one.
