No you misunderstand. You /get/ a new gen starter. You ALSO get a gen 1 starter lol.

Then if you get the event pokemon (torchic) you can start off with 3 starters!
(Of course without restarting the game and trading to get all lol)

Meh it makes sense to me.
I wont argue anymore x'D
but I like it a lot ^_^ I think they are all awesome

You /can/ go through the game with a meganium easy enough
but It does have a really crappy movepool that is a fact (among all those other things lol)
