I do agree with your own desire to read the A Song of Ice and Fire series (the one Game of Thrones is based off of). I'm currently reading it now and it is worth it.

Oh cool, you like fantasy and magic. If you're interested in something involving a fantasy realm of sorts and it does have magic in it. My fiancé and I both like the what is currently the Abhorsen Trilogy (which is part of the Old Kingdom series) by Garth Nix (in order: Sabriel, Lirael, and Abhorsen are the ones that we've read). He's in the works of another one that is currently I think in editing or something and will be out next year we hope.
Basically it involves fantasy, some form of magic, and necromancers (who actually are good guys in this). So, I think you might like this or it'd be worth a shot. ^_^ Hope this helps.
