Well Natsu, I understand that your ex friend is being insensitive, but did it ever occur to you to ask the person whose number he wanted if you could give it out? I am sure that would have avoided this whole argument instead of shutting him out completely and leading to him being defensive. As a person that uses laughter for defense I can see how a simple lol can seem patronizing.

That being said why is he able to contact you if you are ex best friends? I am sure your closest friends know the situation and you can unfriend him so he can not send you a message and hurt you again. No one on no social network talks to me unless I want them to. If you are not willing to talk simply say I can't help, sorry and leave it.

My advice for something like this in the future is to either ignore it if it seems like the guy is trying to get a rouse, or answer the best you can and if you can see they are getting defensive drop it.
