I actually recommend bringing in a third party to mediate a discussion. Pick someone that isn't part of the 'circle' of involved people, but someone that may know what's going on. And if you can find someone that they both respect, or like, even better. When you yourself try to mediate things like this OTHER things, things that may not be the real issue, get brought up, and it muddies the waters. Usually a parent, teacher or mentor is a great person to ask to do this.
