The setting has a complexity about it that I couldn't possibly get into the backstory below. All you really need to know for your character creation is that an entity (should we call it a reaper?) hunts down those that use magic actively. Spellslingers (whatever they prefer to be called) are banished there if they manage to stand up against it. The world is called "Novus Terra" or New Earth. It has a fantasy feel about it. But remember that it was formed from myths, superstition, dreams, and memories of the real world. And this world reflects that.
ps You may also play non-human characters or humans from Novus Terra.
Back Story
Hundreds of years ago back in the days of castles and knights. In the days Christian practices were replacing the old pagan practices of the western world. It was war that went quietly recorded with most details left out. The church of the time won out mostly thanks to its efforts to channel all magical energy in the world into an empty dimension next to the one we live in. Knowing they could not possibly capture all magical energy they devised a complex entity that existed solely to hunt down and kill anyone using magic. Only those capable of practicing the forbidden art could see it. Most people do not know about it as anyone who has seen the entity was also its target.
While many do not survive a confrontation some have. In groups it can be defeated. Or with a little ingenuity some can make the entity unstable, after all it is just a complex spell. Before it retreats it always opens a portal that pulls in wizards. Presumably it throws them into the same dimension which all magic energy was sent away. Over the course of time the concentration of chaotic energy formed a world. It is a complicated place formed of dreams, myths, and realities.
"Reliable" history records of this world (dubbed "Novus Terra" by some)only date back a hundred years. More advanced technology is also mostly limited humans whom either came from Earth or are their descendants. Even then it's developing as humans coming from Earth don't come along often and even then are not usually experts in technology. The relationship with the other races are usually strained because of the fact they only exist because of a human memory. And that their real world counterparts were killed off the war centuries ago. These are only general rules and do not apply broadly to all groups of their respective races.
Novus Terra
While people may be coming from a modern day Earth. The world of Novus Terra, because of its beginning, reflects the myths and gods of the western world. Other mythologies later found their way there as magical energy of other cultures were sent into the void that became Novus Terra.
