I came into knitting basically by the fact that I like crafting, and I was trying to find a way to recycle plastic bags and old t-shirts, I cut them up into "yarn" and then taught myself to knit via the internet... The very first thing I ever knit was made out of plastic yarn using two pencils. That was... I think... four years ago. Maybe. I don't know. I don't keep track. But my mom was never much of a crafter, she doesn't have the sit-down patience for it, and my grandmother did crochet but never really taught me as I couldn't get beyond the chain... Well, I'm left handed so I imagine that was part of the challenge. Actually I don't think she ever really thought about it much and later in her life she was losing her vision so she couldn't really do it herself. I promise you there is a video out there which will help you make a granny square.
Yeah, I like punk and the feel of it, though obviously I'm not exactly part of the "scene" and really, I'm about 20 years too late, but it is a nice starting point to work from as it has a lot of emotion in it (even though it is mostly angry).
