It's not so much what you can add to make it fancy, as much as the basic fabric that I like. A basic knitted fabric is smoother and, in my opinion much prettier than a single crocheted fabric. But it's much easier to do lace with crochet, and it's great for things like flowers and small motifs. I have just about every hook size from a tiny steel size 14 (don't know the exact measurement but it's about 1mm) to an "S" / 15mm hook... And a similar range in knitting needles. I've also tried tunisian / afghan crochet, which is interesting, and adds a whole different set of looks...
