For the runt of the litter, it was def. the best thing to do cause the runts are always the ones that usually don't survive in the wild and sorry to hear he had been put to sleep. I had a kitten a few years back that our neighbour put down without telling us after we had told him, after she gave birth, we were officially taking her in, my mom was crying when we found out. We ended up taking in a slightly older kitten that ended up being abandoned a few months later.
As for the kitten that got away, there's a good chance he or she may not be sick and that she/he is able to survive without needing human help or could of found a home already.
The only thing about traps, is you could catch any cat that wanders in looking for a free meal.
I remember having a kitten where we lived that was feral. She always wanted to come up around humans cause the cat she hung around with could come up to certain people and she always hung back but you could see her watching.
