I don't think this makes you a bad person but it sounds like you might be having a run in with ignorance. I'm not trying to be mean to you or anything because, well, it's just a word. If you have never had problems with money or you are able to have a job and always have money when you want to do something just because you can- you are highly privileged.

I grew up eating out of schools trash cans for years. I even split cans of dog food with my dog and, most of the time, I gave her food that I had scrounged up for myself so she would have something to eat too. Granted, I had some electricity at the time but it wasn't enough. I wasn't given what I needed to survive. I would have been fine with a few meals at the house a week and no electricity.

I'm living in a trailer with 4 other people and one of us JUST got a job after searching for nearly 6 months. We've been living off of her husbands' retirement (she is my mother-in-law) and it has put an emotional toll on all of us. I'm not from money and any money I might come into will be from working my ASS off.

Until I get a job, I won't be able to pay for my wedding. So, naturally, I'm scrambling for a job at the moment and have been for a while. It is possible your friends are lazy snobs who just don't want to work and, in this case, they don't deserve your money. If they really are underprivileged and can barely afford to hold onto their house- they don't need nice things. They need money to pay for bills, food, ect.

I just think that, in more extreme cases, you need to consider the possibilities of abuse or stinginess of the parents. If your friends are old enough to get jobs then that needs to be their focus- not going out or buying video games, ect.
