It's a hair better, and still does badly in impacts. Only thing it improves on is that it is less likely to roll due to an increase in weight.

And with that, then look at cars other than VW and Mazda. You want a well made car? Look at Toyotas, Fords and Chevys. Stop being so picky with the niceties, and look for a damn practical and well made vehicle. Hell, my Mustang does well in all collisions except for rear, and that's because of the lower length of the rear seats and the trunk. Yes, it is a nice car, but I picked it for the fact that it was reasonable, held up, and is known for having a strong frame that does well in crashes/collisions.

Again, I can freaking testify to a TOYOTA. I got into an accident with my 04 Camry, and the police and EMTs looked at me and said that I was damn lucky not to have gotten worse injuries than I did. If I was in, oh say a Mazda 3 (even the 5 door), I would likely have suffered from a dislocated shoulder, several broken bones, and quite possibly neck/spinal injuries. This is my own testimony, and I stand by what I say.
