I don't know if I'd call it classic sci fi really. My prof called it "Cyber Punk" (the movie more than the book) and it feels about that to me, given the visuals. The movie is very dark though, as in colour, so you need a good TV to see. Most of the details come from neon lighting and store signs. I could have done withour Harrison Ford though. He didn't quite fit to me, but I guess that's because to me he's adventure man and not brooding moody detective guy. There is some oddball metaphorical stuff going on in the movie that's not in the book if I remember correctly, which would be Ridley Scott's doing. (Watched the director's cut for my paper on post apocalyptic lit). The book does give you more details on the actual state of the world and humanity though, the movie essentially skips over that, or the bulk of it, and there is no mention of Mercer, antheads, or an electric sheep.
