2019 Reading Challenge
i set myself a reading challenge every year, which is to read more books than the previous year. 2017 was the first year i did this on Trisphee, (i had a great time! thanks Moonshadow!) and last year i had fun hosting... so here we are again!
so, (snagging from previous threads), set a challenge for yourself: read 50 books, read only the books you have at home that you haven't read yet, read a specific genre, read only non-fiction books... whatever you choose. Your first post should contain your challenge, and use a spoiler to indicate how you are progressing in meeting that challenge. i use a spoiler for my booklist. =) Please feel free to chat about books, your day, anything! https://cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/03...g?v=1411837338 |

my reading challenge: in 2018, i read 37 books. my goal is to read more than that.... Goal Completed, and still going!
for my information: |
Hmmm...I did pretty abysmal last year. I think this year, my goal will be...only 15 books. *Was only gonna try for 12, one per month, but I actually have a lot of in progress books, so I should be able to maybe finish a couple of those off in a month.
Kaderin's Reading List |
I was hoping this would be here! I flaked out and forgot.
My challenge this year is to read (for challenge credit) only the books I already own! (Christmas presents count. ;)) For extra fun, I've wrapped them all so it's going to be something of a surprise which ones I end up reading and in what order. ~ Quiet's Book Challenge 2019 ~ "The Incomplete Bookshelf" [spoil]2018 holdouts: Vas - Tomasula January: Sword of Destiny - Sapkowski James and the Giant Peach - Dahl February: Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of NIMH - O'Brien Fatty Legs - Joran-Fenton & Pokiak-Fenton The Prince and the Dressmaker - Wang Confessions of an Imaginary Friend - Cuevas March: Coraline - Gaiman Bunnicula Meets Edgar Allan Crow - Howe I work at a Public Library - Sheridan Cthulhu Tales - various Tom Gates: Dog Zombies Rule! |
off to a good start! i read I Work at a Public Library, by Gina Sheridan in a day! heh. fun little stories about library patron. most made me stare at the page and go "really??" at end though, i think my allergies were acting up, it was really dusty where i was reading it...
|
Really? I want to read that! I'm hoping to get some experience in a public library this semester.
|
heh, have fun!
here's an excerpt i posted on my instagram.... https://instagram.fphl2-1.fna.fbcdn.....fna.fbcdn.net yeah. |
Hee hee.
I like reading job stories. Some stuff can get a little odd, and people can be weird about anything. |
check out notalwaysright.com - highly entertaining, even if it does make you want to smash your head into the desk more than once....
|
I hate that expression. And it's always cited by the most irritating customers.
Will totally check it out! |
agreed - the customer is not always right.
|
>->; I should probably read more often..I didn't read a lot at all last year...
Can I join the reading challenge? :[ I have quite a few things I've not gotten around to reading and even got two books for Christmas. <x[ I've been neglecting the book book books. Like finishing Frankenstein finally, and re-reading a collection of short stories that I read a long time ago in Jr. High, and also getting around to reading the harry potter series in order this time... |
of course you can join, Merskelly!!
i'll link your post #15 up in post #2, so feel free to update that one with books read, plan to read, and whatever else you'd like. i'm post #4, if you want to see what i have. =) |
Okie dokie. :] Will do!
|
How have you not finished Frankenstein? I LOVE that book!
Lovecraft is pretty awesome too. I'm annoyed that, as he's dead, he wont' be writing anything else. I have a print compendium and one on my ereader. My favourite story is The Shadow out of Time, but the most popular seem to be The Dunwich Horror, At the Mountains of Madness (novella), The Whisperer in the Darkness, and The Rats in the Walls. Surprised me that Cthullu himself is really a small portion of his literature. There's a pile of other stuff. My original plan for my reading challenge this year may be interrupted somewhat, as my leisure reading now relates to a lot of kids material. I have to compile and annotate a resource list of kids' books, age 2-12, with at least 30 books. So far, I've been through Mabel Murple, Let's Paint!, Alligator Pie, Isle of You, and I'm reading into one of the "Dear Canada" series with letters from immigrants, Hoping for Home. I need to have a certain amount of Canadian content on this list. I've added a few that I read from last year. I've waiting for library holds to show up for James and the Giant Peach, Something from Nothing, A Child's Garden of Verses, and Sweetest Lulu. I'm open to suggestions, especially as I have no kids and I'm pretty terrible with guessing what age a book might be for. I also need more kiddy novels and fewer picture books. Anyone have thoughts? PS And I am not properly formatting my story names. Gasp! |
Ugh, trying to decide if I want to count audio books on my list or not...
But probably not as you don't technically read them, you just listen to them. But might put a small separate list for audio books. Because tbh, I've gotten into them recently... |
Well, :) As a girl I loved reading The Bailey School Kids chapter books and of course Goosebumps books. But I really enjoyed reading The Frog Princess by E.D. Baker when I was around mayyyybe 13 years old.
I dunno if that's the age group you're looking for, but :} Choose your own adventure books were SUPER fun to read! I used to dabble in all kinds of them in elementary school! Also, I wanna finish Frankenstein! <Xo it's such a beautiful sad storyyy! And I left off on the midpoint where Victor's creation is about to tell him his story in the mountains!~ |
Yeah, the age bracket is 2-12, and I hardly remember most of that time so I'm drawing blanks. I read mostly horse books I think, with vague recollections of Romona and Beezes.
I've taken to looking up audio short stories since there's so many I want to see but don't have in print and don't want to read in the computer. Youtube has a lot there. I'm investigating old gothic and weird shorts. |
i love love love love LOVE Lovecraft. my faves are Cool Air, The Cats of Ulthar, and the Outsider.
all of his writing is also online at the HPLovecraft Archive |
It actually took me a while to get used to audio books, but I love that I can actually work on my loom knitting while a book is basically being read to me. I just have a hard time finding ones that I want to listen to. XD
I'll be honest, I have never read any Locecraft. I should pick something up to read this year. |
i still read physical books from the library. =)
and... i just got an email that one of my books is ready for pickup! =) |
I still read physical books from my bookshelf. I'm just saying, it's almost impossible to loom knit (or make chainmaille stuff) and read a book at the same time unless I magically grow 2 more arms and a second head. So audio books allow literary enjoyment while I craft.
|
LOL!
if i'm reading the right type of book (hardback) and i'm doing the right crochet stitch (granny square, or something where you crochet into a big space instead of a stitch) then i can read and crochet at the same time. otherwise... nope. XD |
Though, growing two more arms and an extra head sounds very Lovecraftian. xD Heheh.
@trystan: I love Cool Air! Ugg when I first read it I just- 8} it was like chills and terror in a tasty cake! Speaking of Lovecraft, :} I actually kinda sorta wrote a little short story (Link to it here) that I tried mirroring in a Lovecraft style, though I can't come quite so close to his other works. <x} No surprise there, as I'm a novice and have very little vocabulary skill from the early 1900's lol! Also... I just finished reading Death of a Salesman by Arthur Miller this morning around 2. It was sad. :[ And a good read, albeit a short one. I was totally immersed in the tragedy and utter bitterness of it all. Next on my list I think I'll start reading The Picture of Dorian Grey. :] |
ooh, i'll have to give your story a read a little later on
and i was also thinking about reading (rereading? i think i read it quite a way back) Dorian Gray too. =) |
:D Ahh neat-o cheet-os!~
I should add some more stuff to read, actually, :/ more variety I mean...maybe I'll take up reading Catch-22, Dracula or Lord of the Flies. I want to own The Most Dangerous Game by Richard Connell too. :D I remember reading that a long time ago! And I also heard really great things about At the Mountains of Madness, but I only started reading the first pages before I had to return my library book of Lovecraft's stories! <X{ Augh! I'm a library book bandit, but I had to return it because it was the only copy they had...and I wanted someone else to pick it up. ;-; <3 |
ooh At the Mountains of Madness is also a good one. =)
also, i own Dracula, Lord of the Flies, and Catch-22 as well! =) |

AaaaaAaaaa~ <:D Thank you! You think so?? *is flattered*
I'm kind of fairly new at fiction writing... </u//<; Which one did you enjoy the most? <:] |
you're welcome!
well, they're different. Extinction.exe reminded me of a Black Mirror episode, and The Old Days definitely had that "Lovecraft" twist to it. but i think i liked Extinction.exe lots |
<:D I love black mirror. I must admit, I wish I could write a black mirror episode!
Ahh! <x] Well, I'm glad you enjoyed them both. ^-^ I hope to write more short stories in the future. In the meantime, I'm going to start reading The Picture of Dorian Grey. ^u^ I love reading when I have no idea what I'm in for..>u> Oh, and by the way, xD Am I the only one who makes faces that reflects what I'm reading when I read??? |
i love Black Mirror, too, i've seen all of it as well. my younger daughter just started watching it earlier today.

xD haha! glad I'm not the only one! I just get so immersed! Don't you just love that? :]
|
nope.
i love getting immersed in what i'm reading |
I'll be honest, I don't actually know if I make faces when I'm reading or not. Because my cats can't tell me and I often get so involved in the story that I forget my surroundings, let alone what my face is doing.
XD |
<x} I can't help my expression so, if you're immersed in reading you might be subconsciously smiling at a funny or heartwarming moment, or looking stern when reading about two characters having tension or fighting. I'd wager it'd be kinda funny watching someone else read and finding them doing the same thing. xD
Sometimes I read something hilarious and burst out in laughter or something just wholesome and end up rolling around and clutching the book wanting to cry joyfully. <x3 |
I don't get as into books when reading in a public area or around other people. Mainly because I am super self-conscious, so I'm actually really worried about making faces at my book or other reactions....so yeah....whether I make faces when I read or not shall always remain a mystery.
But when alone, I do sometimes chuckle to myself about funny/clever bits or cry when something really sad happens. |
