Had to double-take for a moment there. I don't have a Quiet Man in my story. I have a Quick Man, and a Shadow Man, but no Quiet Man.

trystan830 11-22-2017 01:48 PM

that moment when NaNo and reality collide...

Coda 11-26-2017 11:12 PM

Two days in the car = no NaNo writing. Definitely not going to finish NaNo this year. I'm not going to consider it an outright failure but "50,000 words in 30 days" is definitely not an achievable goal. ;)

Going forward, I'm going to take a bit of time to restructure my outline to be more appropriate for publishing it as a serial. I'll also need to figure out what I want my update schedule to be, how much I want to try to write for each update, and how much of a buffer I want to establish.

I'm not sure if I'm going to continue cross-posting on Trisphee or if I'm going to just publish exclusively on Sufficient Velocity. Is anyone actually reading it here?

trystan830 11-26-2017 11:15 PM

well, 50,000 words in 30 days may not be achievable for you... but that's okay. as the email i just got from my ML said, it's X words more than you started with! (in your case, the X is 14595)

this is the first year i started it, but didn't get the word count. but i finished the story!!!

i'm kinda skimming it, but i'm a little behind. but it's ok if you don't xpost it here.

Coda 11-26-2017 11:19 PM

More importantly, it's momentum on a story I've been wanting to write for months. I really can't wait to get to the good stuff.

trystan830 11-26-2017 11:26 PM

momentum is good. i had that with Love on Rye (NaNo 2011), and that was a roller coaster one i got the momentum going! =D

Who is what now?

No progress beyond a paragraph penned out at a Starbucks last week. I'm working on my research paper so connecting my pieces of short story isn't a priority right now but hopefully I can get it done by the 30th. It's my tiniest nano goal so far. Shameful if I don't manage it.

The crass answer is "read my story." ;)

The more polite answer: In the Mega Man series, most of the bosses are named "___ Man". In my story I've already introduced "Quick Man" and my outline has "Shadow Man" in it. The joke was that "Quiet Man" looks like a name in this pattern, for a character that doesn't exist.

Quiet Man Cometh 11-28-2017 09:02 PM

Can't read. Typing. ;P

Well, trying to. And no Mega Man here, sadly.

Mekatra 11-29-2017 05:28 PM

I'm just popping in to say no matter how many words you got this month, you tried and by that measure you did nothing but succeed. Artistic expression cannot be judged based on numbers. If you put something of yourself onto the page, then you're a winner.

trystan830 11-29-2017 05:29 PM

hear! hear!

Coda 02-01-2018 12:05 PM

I'm still working on my story and it's only around 28k words. :x

I got readers, at least!

trystan830 02-01-2018 12:25 PM

yaay readers! i pop in every so often take a look-see. =)

Coda 02-01-2018 02:37 PM

I'm not actually focusing on word count. I put out an average of 800 words three times a week. It would take me two weeks to write three days' worth of NaNo quota at this pace. It's definitely short-form entertainment. But it's sustainable for me, and people seem to like it.

One of my readers said he's "legitimately sad that Wily's probably going to reprogram [Top Man] now." That's high praise!

trystan830 02-01-2018 02:49 PM

some years ago, one of the times my older daughter did NaNo (2013, i think. i could look.... too lazy. anyway!)

she reached the word count goal in november. and then it took her 6 months to finish... and i think the final word count was close to 100,000 words when she was all done, too! O_O

trystan830 10-03-2018 12:49 PM

---8 months pass---

who's in? i'm plotting! i have a 2-page summary! of mostly overarching places i want the story to go. nothing tooooo specific though. but i'm plotting! XD

Death by Mirrors 10-03-2018 03:22 PM

Eep! Go away! XD

No, really. Isn't this a bit too early? I already feel the taste of instant noodles whenever someone speaks of that event...

trystan830 10-03-2018 04:01 PM

LOL!

well, you're kinda right in that it's early... for me! i usually remember a weird piece of a dream i have in mid- to late October and figure out how to turn it into my NaNo. but this year - i had a weird dream and remembered it .... in august!!

so then i've been trying to figure out how to get it to connect with two other weird bits of dreams that i remembered.... and i think i actually have something. me, the pantser! D

Death by Mirrors 10-03-2018 05:03 PM

Well then, congratulations on your early preparation ^^

I don't get any weird dreams usually, so I have to come up with ideas all on my own. This year I'm thinking I might just use a pen&paper rpg player's guide as initial inspiration, create a few characters and go from there.

trystan830 10-03-2018 05:06 PM

oooh that sounds cool =)

Death by Mirrors 10-03-2018 05:22 PM

Yup, and it gives me a reason to spend unreasonable amounts of time with character creation and p&p sheets.

trystan830 10-03-2018 05:50 PM

woohoo!!

Death by Mirrors 10-03-2018 05:58 PM

Completely unrelated, can I interest you in the great opportunity to run a game during the upcoming nox event? Fame and glory awaits (and retired items as staff funded prizes if at least 5 people express their interest here)

Mekatra 10-03-2018 06:12 PM

Gah, I'm already excited for/dreading next month. I've got two stories planned because I don't really think either merit a full book length of 50k, but we'll see what happens.

Death by Mirrors 10-03-2018 06:19 PM

Meh, I'm pretty sure I'll start writing random crap halfway through just for word count. One of my character archetypes (the witch) has a skill that gives her a bonus if her magic ritual transgresses common standards of morality or something, so that gives me a chance to go either down the route of "super cute yet super psycho" or make her a leather clad hardcore perv.

trystan830 10-03-2018 06:23 PM

i'll think about it, Death

go for it, Mekatra!

Mekatra 10-03-2018 06:25 PM

I feel like "Super cute yet also a psycho" and "leather clad perv" could be the same character. That archetype of sweet librarian by day and dominatrix by night kind of thing.

Death by Mirrors 10-03-2018 06:27 PM

Hmmm... I kinda like the way you think XD

but we'll see. There's other characters too, the fey is a flamboyant gay guy and one of the monsters thinks he's a chosen monster hunter.

Quiet Man Cometh 10-04-2018 12:33 AM

I don't want this to be a thing yet! I'm busy and I'm scared of writing every day. I'll be on the forums and nattering anyway, I'm sure. I do like to go to the events and things, even if I'm not actually getting much done.

trystan830 10-04-2018 01:35 PM

well, it's not a thing juuuust yet XD

but i pretty much only write in November. LOL!

and i'm kinda excited about my idea, too

Death by Mirrors 10-04-2018 03:02 PM

I'm scared of writing every day too, but come November that doesn't make it any less fun. There's just something special about knowing thousands of people suffer alongside me. That, and where else do you get to feel productive when you spend the whole day in your pajamas.

mdom 10-04-2018 03:39 PM

I think the most I did was 10k, then I... had no more words in me xDD

trystan830 10-04-2018 10:17 PM

i don't suffer, Death... i enjoy it! LOL

actually it's kinda fun

mdom - you could try a Camp NaNo, you can set your own word count goal

Death by Mirrors 10-05-2018 07:54 AM

Blasphemy! LOL

(nah, actually I enjoy it too. sleep is for the weak anyway)

Mekatra 10-05-2018 11:07 AM

There's really no shame in not getting 50k. To be honest any writing that you do is a good amount of writing and is more than the average person out there that doesn't participate at all.

trystan830 10-05-2018 04:55 PM

to quote a character from a tv show, "sleep is for wimps."

and i agree, Mekatra - any writing that gets done is awesome. =)

Kaderin Triste 10-05-2018 06:16 PM

Ugh, I keep thinking I should do this, but I never prep before Nov rolls around, so I always start off with a cool story idea and then never actually get any writing done. I think I wrote like...5 sentences last year?

trystan830 10-05-2018 06:19 PM

Kaderin, i'm a First-Class Pantser. i've had a little kernel of an idea, and each year i started a new novel on November 1, i've gotten to the end of November with over 50,000 words.

the one year i didn't - i didn't start with a new novel, but with one that i was mostly done with, but needed that final kick to finish the story. i was a NaNo Rebel last year. =D

this year, i've done a little bit more of planning and world building, i can link my planning google doc, if anyone's interested.

Death by Mirrors 10-05-2018 06:35 PM

Kaderin yes you should do this :p-cool: maybe 2018 is the year you finally show the world your story

I don't plan much in advance either. Usually I find when I'm writing straight from the beginning to the end I always (or 90% of the time) dislike whatever scene I have to write next and would rather do something else instead. Then I scrap my initial plan to end up with stuff like a female side character who lives with a drag queen fortune teller, hosts a muk-bang video broadcast and uses a tesla coil to appear as if she devours lightning.

trystan830 10-05-2018 06:41 PM

ah, NaNo, the novels of Non-Sequiturs!
